It's been a tough day here in the Pacific Northwest.The man who saved baseball in Seattle, the man who robbed more homeruns than I can count and the man whose smile could light up an airplane hanger is hanging up his cleats for the last time...and I think I'm still in denial about it.
Ken Griffey Jr. was one of the greatest players to ever play the game and I was fortunate enough to see him play in person a handful of times. He provided Mariners' fans with a lifetime of highlights and for that he will always have a special place in our hearts.
Goodbye Ken. I wish I could say more, but right now I just don't have the words. We'll never forget you and I'll never stop trying to track down every card every produced.
I guess today makes that goal a little easier...just don't tell that to my heart.
As a fellow Griffey collector and, more importantly, fan, I'm still getting over the surprise of today's announcement.
ReplyDeleteAm I shocked that Griffey retired? Not really, if I'm being honest with myself - he was 40 years old and not producing up to his usual standards for a couple of years now. But I am surprised that he retired in the middle of the season. I guess I thought he'd wait until the end of the year.
I know he didn't want a farewell tour, and that's why he retired so suddenly, but he could have just waited and then made a subtle announcement in November that he was done. That the announcement came out of the blue (clubhouse nap story last month notwithstanding) is what causes the shock to me.
Great post about a great player. While I am not a Seattle fan I had to appreciate, admire, and respect his greatness on the field and class off the field. He will be missed on the diamond.
